Today, I went into the Mac Store to learn what I could do about my new ipod that I bought with my tax rebate money (it was skipping songs) I learned that I just needed to restore it and that would automatically load the new updates. I thought the updates were current, because that's what iTunes said, but the guy at the Mac store said that that was wrong, so when I got home, I restored my ipod. Shortly before though, I received a notice that iTunes 7.2 was available and would I like to update? Due to my bad history with iTunes updates, I perform them as least often as possible. But I wanted to make sure that I had all the updates for my ipod to fix the problem, so I figured what the heck, I'll take the risk and upgrade.
BIG MISTAKE. After I restarted my computer, it took nearly three minutes for the icons to appear on my desktop, which almost always indicates something is timing out; that it is supposed to do something within a certain amount of time, and when it can't, it does what is deemed timing out. Anyways, the icons finally load. I plug in my ipod, only to be greeted with an error message/warning that my audio drivers are not installed/configured/set up correctly so there may be some sound and video issues. What the hell? I know I don't talk about it much, but I am a big audio/video editing geek, I have everything from Virtual Dub and Audacity to DbPowerAmp and AMVapp. Although my computer's memory isn't that well set up for it, I play around with a lot of audio and video files, either creating them or editing them. My sound card, sound drivers, and video drivers are FINE. In pristine condition even.
Thinking this is weird, but not the end of the world, I open Media Monkey, the best music organizer/manager/player in the history of the 'verse. I click on a song, only to get an error message about my sound drivers. I try to click ok, only for it to skip down to the next song, and repeat the error message. I can't even click cancel. I have to forcefully shut down the programs (the beauty of Ctrl-Alt-Del).
I am now thoroughly annoyed so I set my computer back with system restore. Luckily there was a restore point for yesterday. Once my computer restarts, I start up iTunes. It won't start. Evidently, now there are files missing, so now it needs to be reinstalled. Oh joy. Luckily though, once I rolled back iTunes the sound drivers are suddenly fine again. Media Monkey works beautifully once again.
iTunes does not. But in the realm of programs to die, iTunes is definitely the one I'd miss the least.
Just wanted to warn anyone who was thinking of updating to iTunes 7.2. Don't. Save yourself the hassle.
